A wedding in Epirus for Katerina and Andreas on the island of Koronisia in the Amvrakikos Gulf just outside Arta. Ceremony at the church of Genesiou tis Theotokou, reception at Arta Palace Hotel. Photography by arChive Visual Storytellers.
The wedding
Koronissia is a small island in the Amvrakikos Gulf in Epirus, connected to the mainland by a single road. The lagoon landscape that surrounds it, wetlands, still water, the reflections of the sky, is unlike anything on a Greek island. The village sits at the edge of the water, quiet and unhurried, with fishing boats and the kind of light that comes off a sheltered gulf rather than the open sea.
Katerina and Andreas chose it to begin something new, close to their families in Arta and people they love.
The ceremony was held at the church of Genesiou tis Theotokou on the island. A summer storm threatened during the day and then held off, leaving the most cloudless afternoon of June in its place.
The reception moved to Arta Palace Hotel on the mainland.
Our approach
Epirus is not a destination most couples consider for a wedding, and that is exactly what made this commission interesting. Before arriving we spent time with Katerina and Andreas to understand who they are, their characters, their shared history, what mattered to them about the day. That conversation shaped everything that followed.
We scouted the area thoroughly. Koronisia itself, the lagoon, the light on the water. For the day-after we selected locations that belong specifically to this part of Greece and nowhere else. An antique car was brought in for the session. We drove to Kokkinopilos in Preveza, the geological formation with the deep red soil that sits between Preveza and Arta, terra rossa, a landscape that looks unlike anything else in the country. And to Lake Pournari, formed by the Arachthos River and the Pournari Dam, with emerald water framed by the Tzoumerka range. When the water level drops, the submerged village of Kato Kalentini and its old school occasionally reappear at the surface.
These are not locations that appear on wedding photography lists. They are locations that belong to Katerina and Andreas and to the part of Greece they chose.
