The wedding

Serifos is one of the Cycladic islands that people often miss. Its character is easy to notice right away. The Chora sits high on a rocky ridge above the port, with whitewashed buildings packed together and churches standing out against the sky. From the sea, it is one of the most recognizable villages in the Cyclades, setting the mood for an island that feels unique and quietly confident. The land below is tougher, dry and shaped by years of iron ore mining. Both sides are part of Serifos, and weddings here usually move between them.

Marilena and Luke planned three days for their celebration.

The first day was a prewedding party at Fragosyko in Livadi. By the time the wedding day came, everyone already felt comfortable together, so the ceremony at Agios Sostis felt more like a natural next step than a formal start. The church is close to the sea on the island’s west side, surrounded by the easy, open afternoon light of the Aegean. The celebration continued at Rizes Hotel, and by the end, the two days had blended into one long event.

On the third day, we visited Metalleia. The old mine installations at the southern end of Serifos are what remain of iron ore extraction that ran from the late 19th century into the 20th. Rusted infrastructure, collapsed galleries, stone and metal above the sea. Marilena is an architect, and the administrative building of the complex was one of her references on the island, a structure that had stayed with her. We spent part of the day-after there, inside and around it.

Our approach

It’s important to arrive early in Serifos. The island is small, so you can get to most places quickly, but the mines at Metalleia and the church at Agios Sostis need to be seen in real daylight before deciding on timing and where to shoot.

A two-day wedding with a prewedding party sets its own pace. On the first day, I watch to see who’s in the group, how the couple interacts, and what the mood feels like. By the wedding day, I already have a sense of these things.

Marilena and Luke trusted us completely throughout the three days. Before we arrived, we already knew enough about them to imagine the kind of story Serifos would tell for them. The prewedding party confirmed our ideas, and we photographed the rest of the day with that story in mind.
