ABOUT

A Santorini caldera elopement for Wannie and Owen. Photos through empty spring time Oia and the caldera around several island locations. Photography by arChive Visual Storytellers.

The ELOPEMENT

Wannie and Owen visited Santorini for their elopement session. Choosing the island as the place to take their vows away from a full wedding's guest list. They stayed in a private cave-style suite overlooking the Aegean, watching one of the world's most photographed sunsets with a glass of champagne.

The elopement moved around the island's Caldera and Oia coastline, using the volcanic cliffs and whitewashed architecture as the backdrop for the day. Spring's quieter tourist season gave them access to locations that summer crowds would have made impossible to work in cleanly.

Wannie, a fashion designer from Hong Kong, and Owen chose Santorini specifically for what the island represents rather than as a stop on a wider trip, treating the elopement itself as the entire occasion rather than a preamble to a larger celebration elsewhere.

Our approach

An elopement with no ceremony schedule to follow gave us more freedom in how we used the day. Free from working around fixed events, we planned the shoot around light, choosing which parts of the island to use at which hour, timing the walk toward sunset rather than a set of vows.

Wannie's background in fashion design meant she came to the day with her own instincts about how to move and pose, which changed how we worked. We gave her room to lead some of the portraits rather than directing every frame, letting her own sense of styling shape parts of the shoot.

Beyond Oia, we took the couple out to the Heart of Santorini near Megalochori, a heart-shaped cutout on the cliffside path above Agios Nikolaos Chapel, reached along an unmarked dirt trail away from the island's paved routes. From there we moved to Vlychada beach, where spring had filled the surrounding meadows with daisies and horses moved freely through the fields, a quieter, softer setting than the volcanic cliffs the island is known for.
