ABOUT

A traditional wedding in Ikaria for Dina and Markos, both Greek, living in the United States. Ceremony at the village church next to Markos' house, reception in the churchyard for over a thousand guests. Photography and film by arChive Visual Storytellers.

The wedding

Ikaria has a character all its own. The island stands out in the Aegean with its rocky mountains, dramatic gorges, and villages that have kept the same pace for decades. Time feels different here, and the people seem to set its rhythm.
Markos grew up here. Dina dreamed of this wedding. Both Greek, both living in the United States, they came back to the village to do it the right way.
The right way, on Ikaria, means a Panigiri. Not a wedding in the modern sense - a festival, in the old sense. Dina made this clear from the beginning. Everything was to be done traditionally, as in a typical Ikariotiko Panigiri.
Markos’s closest friends helped him get ready in a way that will not be forgotten by anyone who was there. He was thoroughly exhausted before being handed to the bride. Dina got ready at the Erofili Hotel, overlooking the sea, under considerably more civilised conditions.
The ceremony was held at the village church, right next to Markos' house. The reception continued in the churchyard, where families and friends set up wooden benches and tables. Everyone was welcome, and more than a thousand people came. There was Rasko, local goat, traditional dishes, and Ikarian wine. A live band played, featuring some of Ikaria's best musicians. The Ikariotikos dance began and didn’t stop, with people of all ages dancing together in circles.
Who can forget seventy people coming together on a clifftop in just ten minutes for a group photo? That’s what the spirit of Ikaria is like.

Our approach

Dina and Markos found us from the United States and planned this wedding from another continent. The distance required trust before anything else had been established. What we received in return was complete freedom to work, no shot list, no direction, just the instruction to be present for whatever happened.
On Ikaria, that simple instruction is enough. The wedding creates its own moments, and our job was to stay close and capture them.
The day after, we stayed on the island. The churchyard again, quieter than the night before. Nas beach, Seychelles, Armenistis. Ikaria in the afternoon warm light, with the two of them and no programme.

In their own words

We found George and Angela online from the U.S., little did we know it was a blessing in disguise. They are both very kind, responsive (which is a relief when planning a wedding from a different continent), easy to work with and talented. Their years of experience is demonstrated by their exceptional customer service and quality of work. It is no wonder why they are in high demand across the world. George and Angela were able to capture the emotional moments that we missed or forgot about during our wedding due to so many things happening at once. Now we have those special memories arChiv-ed forever to share with family and friends.

One of my favorite shots from my wedding was when my father and husband both kissed me on each side of my cheeks at the same time while we were dancing. Sadly, I totally forgot this happened, but I luckily had George and Angela there to capture that and other key moments to relive them again. In my opinion, many brides and grooms tend to overlook one of the most important factors of a wedding: being able to relive the experience again, after the day is over. Priorities typically include decor, food, etc., but those things disappear after the wedding day. What lives forever are memories that are recalled by images and video. Photography and videography were one of the most important budget items for our wedding — we wanted to be able to share our wedding with family and friends that were unable to attend and with our future children. Now all we have to do is flip through our wedding album or watch our wedding video created by George and Angela to relive one of the best days of our lives.
