ABOUT
A wedding in Folegandros for Maria and Martin, from Greece and Sweden. A cruise to Katergo the day before, ceremony at the Church of Panagia above the Chora, reception at Blue Cuisine. Photography and film by arChive Visual Storytellers.
The wedding
Folegandros is hidden away in the Cyclades, away from the usual tourist routes. The Chora sits within a medieval castle, with bougainvillaea climbing over white balconies and cliffs dropping steeply all around. Unlike busier islands, it has kept its unique charm. That makes a difference for a wedding.
The day before the wedding, family and friends took a boat to Katergo, a wild beach on the island’s southern coast. That evening, everyone gathered for a cocktail party by the pool at Fata Morgana.
On the wedding day, Martin and his family and friends walked the rocky path from Pounda square up to the Church of Panagia, the whitewashed church overlooking the Chora where an ancient temple once stood. Maria followed with her bridesmaids. At the top, Martin's father was waiting. Håkan Hardenberger, one of the world's leading trumpet soloists, played as Maria arrived. The sound of the trumpet, the stone path, and the Aegean below. The moment needed no direction.
After the ceremony, everyone gathered for the reception at Blue Cuisine. A party that survived a one-and-a-half-hour electricity cut without losing a step. The Swedish tradition held that if the bride or groom left the room, any guest could claim a kiss from the one left behind. The Greeks adopted it immediately.
The next morning, everyone enjoyed brunch by the sea in Angali.
