ABOUT
A destination wedding in Hydra, in the Saronic Gulf. Ceremony at St George's Church in Hydra Town, reception at Sunset restaurant moving on to Spilia. Photography by arChive Visual Storytellers.

The wedding

Hydra is located 30 nautical miles from Athens, close enough to reach by sea in less than two hours, but far enough to feel completely separate from the mainland. The island is seen as the heart of the Argosaronic, with Poros, Spetses, and Ermioni nearby, but Hydra is the one people visit for its own unique charm. The port town climbs steeply from the waterfront like an amphitheatre, with 18th-century stone mansions built by seafaring families whose ships once traded across the Mediterranean. There are no cars here. The cobblestone streets are only accessible on foot or by donkey, lined with over three hundred churches and the kind of architecture that has attracted painters and artists for generations.

The bride's preparation was on a private yacht docked in Hydra port, while the groom prepared at Cottomatae. These were two very different settings for the same morning, but the island made both feel natural and easy.
The ceremony took place at St George's Church in Hydra Town. The reception started at Sunset restaurant on the waterfront and later moved to Spilia, a bar carved into the rock at the water's edge, where many evenings on the island come to a close.
Friends and family traveled from all over Europe. The gathering had a special feeling that is unique to destination weddings in Hydra: everyone had chosen to be there and arrived already connected to the place.

Our approach

Since Hydra has no vehicles, every location choice has to be planned on foot and ahead of time. The yacht in the port, the church in town, the waterfront restaurant, and the rock bar at the end of the evening all needed to be scouted separately the day before, taking the real light conditions into account.
The out-of-the-way locations and the light on the water gave us the images that defined this wedding: silhouettes against the Saronic Gulf, the port at dusk, the stone, and the sea. Before we arrived, we had learned enough about this couple to know what Hydra could offer them. Everything else came naturally after that.
