ABOUT

A wedding in Hydra for Natalie and Apostolos, from Switzerland. Prewedding party at Hydroneta the night before, ceremony at Agios Nikolaos, reception at Castello, and a day-after through the streets of the island. Photography by arChive Visual Storytellers.

The wedding

Hydra is a small picturesque island in the Saronic Gulf, about two hours by ferry from Piraeus. The port town rises up a steep hillside like an amphitheatre, with 18th-century stone mansions built by seafaring families. There are no cars here. The narrow, cobblestone streets are only accessible on foot or by donkey, and Hydra has managed to keep this unique character better than most Greek islands.
Natalie and Apostolos spent two days on the island.
The night before the wedding, guests met at Hydroneta, a bar built into the rocks right by the water just outside the port. The prewedding party there captured what Hydra does best: a relaxed, seaside atmosphere with the island as a backdrop.
Natalie got ready at the Hydrea Hotel, while Apostolos prepared at Hydroussa. The ceremony took place at Agios Nikolaos, the domed church above the port that has been part of Hydra’s skyline for centuries. The reception followed at Castello, on the hillside above the town.
The next day, we wandered Hydra’s streets with them. There was no schedule and no set destination. The island moved at its own pace in the morning light, with stone buildings and the calm that settles in after a wedding.

Our approach

Hydra influences a wedding long before it starts. Since there are no vehicles on the island, everything has to be carried by hand or by donkey from the port to each spot. When a celebration moves from the waterfront to the church, the hotel, and a hilltop reception, the journey itself becomes part of the experience.
Agios Nikolaos brought its own challenges. The church is on a small islet accessible only by boat. Guests arrived by sea, and when the islet was full, some watched the ceremony from nearby boats. Taking photos there meant learning the boat schedules, watching how the light reflected off the water, and working within the limits of a place not meant for large groups.
Before the wedding, we got to know Natalie and Apostolos, learned the pace of their group, and figured out what they wanted from us. The pre-wedding party at Hydroneta gave us our first glimpse: the light, the energy, and how people moved around them.
The next day, we walked through Hydra with them, away from the formal plans. This let their story unfold in a quieter, natural way. Natalie and Apostolos wandered the streets as themselves, not putting on a show, and the island felt like part of who they were instead of just a setting.
