ABOUT

A destination wedding in Naxos for Peru and Yiorgos. Ceremony at Agios Georgios in Alyko, reception at Axiotissa. Photography by arChive Visual Storytellers.

The wedding

Naxos is the largest and most geographically diverse of the Cyclades. The Portara, a marble gateway of an unfinished Temple of Apollo, has faced the sea since the 6th century BC. The island has mountains, fertile valleys, extensive sandy beaches along the western coast, and at Alyko on the southwestern tip, a protected cedar forest growing from the dunes above the sea.

Peru and Yiorgos had never visited Naxos before. They arrived without prior knowledge of the island.

Peru prepared at Nissaki Beach Hotel. The ceremony was held outdoors at the chapel of Agios Georgios in Alyko, in the cedar forest, with the ruins of an abandoned hotel behind them and the sea ahead. Peru carried wildflowers. After the ceremony, guests threw wildflowers instead of rice. The rain held off for the day and arrived when it was no longer needed. The reception was at Axiotissa, a taverna on the island.

Our approach

Alyko demands an understanding of its character before arrival. The cedar forest, dunes, chapel, and ruins are concentrated within a small area, and the afternoon light shifts rapidly through the trees. We scouted the location and established the sequence of events prior to the wedding day.

Prior to our arrival, we had learned enough about Peru and Yiorgos to anticipate the nature of their wedding: intimate, unforced, and marked by wildflowers rather than formal ceremony. Our photography reflected this tone from the outset.

The portraits taken after the ceremony maintained this quality, featuring the cedar forest, the ruins, and the couple together without a predetermined program.
