The Event

Marina and Antonis married in Athens. Donoussa was where they came  fro their wedding day after. The island where Antonis grew up, the most remote of the Small Cyclades, east of Naxos with a single village and the kind of quiet that belongs to a place with no reason to hurry.

Portraits across the island in the morning light and then at 4am we went to the beach. The sky above Donoussa at that hour holds the galaxy clearly, no city light, no interference. We photographed them with it behind them. An open fire, the two of them, narration recorded for the film, the darkness before the horizon changes. As dawn broke over the Aegean, the session ended and their new life began.

Our Approach

The narration for this film was written before we arrived on Donoussa. We spoke with Marina and Antonis, learned about their relationship and their story, and built the text from what they shared with us. It became the voice over recorded beside the fire on the beach in the hour before dawn — words that belonged specifically to them, read against the darkness before the sky changed.

That is what separates this film from documentation. The narration connects the images to the couple's actual story, giving the film a meaning that the footage alone could not carry. It is personal because it was built to be personal, from the beginning.

The Destination

Donoussa is the easternmost of the Small Cyclades, separated from Naxos by open water and from the other small islands by distance and character. It has one village, a few beaches, and a population small enough that everyone knows when a boat arrives. For couples who grew up on Greek islands, it carries a specific kind of weight — the one that belongs to a place before it becomes a choice.

For a wedding film, Donoussa offers something no more visited island can replicate. Scale, isolation, a quality of darkness at night that makes the sky readable in a way that is rare in the Aegean. A place that photographs and films as itself, without needing anything added to it.
