ABOUT

A three-day wedding in Kythnos for Christina and Constantinos. Prewedding party at Eternal Blue, ceremony at Panagia Flambouriani, reception at Hamsa beach bar on Martinakia beach, and a day-after at Kolona beach and Chora. Photography by arChive Visual Storytellers.

The wedding

Kythnos sits on the western edge of the Cyclades, close enough to Athens to reach by ferry in a few hours and far enough to feel removed from it. The island has 99 beaches, thermal springs at Loutra, and a Chora, officially named Mesaria, that sits inland on the ridge between the two coasts, whitewashed and unhurried, with narrow alleys that reward slow walking.

Christina and Constantinos chose Kythnos for three days.

The prewedding party took place at Eternal Blue, a residential complex overlooking the Aegean. Guests and families arrived, settled in, and the festivities continued until morning. Preparations for the ceremony took place there.

The ceremony was held at Panagia Flambouriani, a church at the tip of a small peninsula on the left side of Flambouria cove. Stone steps carved into the rock lead from the beach up to the church, which stands above the Aegean on three sides. The reception moved to Hamsa, a beach bar and restaurant on Martinakia beach.

The following day we went to Kolona. The double beach, a long strip of sand with the Aegean on both sides, is the most distinctive landform on the island. From there we moved to Chora, through the alleys of the old capital.

Our approach

Kythnos requires covering ground. Kolones, Panagia Flambouriani and the lanes of Chora are spread across the island and each requires a different approach to light and timing. We arrived before the wedding and drove all three locations.

Before arriving we had learned enough about Christina and Constantinos to know what this three-day commission needed. The prewedding party gave us the group dynamic and the first read of the couple together.

The day after at Kolona and Chora gave us the island without the event around it. Two people in two completely different uncrowded locations, both entirely theirs.
